Long before it was absolutely rammed down our throats (yep) as a porn genre, it was possibly a holdover from early adolescent fantasies. At the age when the brain is awakening sexually, the bodies of your peers haven't necessarily developed secondary sex characteristics, so the only examples of someone you find sexually attractive are non-family adults in your life — teachers and your friend's parents. I think that can create an archetype that lasts and can become a 'thing'. Also most men don't realize or at least verbalize it, but being attracted to responsibility and care and experience is very real. No one bats an eye when a straight woman is attracted to a man because he is caring toward a child, but that feeling isn't unique to women.
